How do the MMR system and the ranks work in Dota 2? There are no official statements from Valve nowadays, so I made the work and researched a lot to write this long guide. There might be still mistakes or things that change over time — I will keep the post updated, comment below if something needs to be corrected! This guide is for Dota 2 beginners. For a long time, Dota 2 only had the MMR value, but brought in the ranks to give the players a stronger reference, self-fulfillment and of course a bigger reason to climb higher on the ladder! Your MMR will have a huge impact on to your game quality: The goal is to find the suitable skill rank you really have, so that Dota 2 can match you with equal skilled players into a maximum balanced game. That means MMR decides about your teammates and enemies. Most of you will have experienced that when you are playing with friends who have a completely different MMR higher or lower then the queue time is much higher. The Dota 2 algorithm has to find the right mix for a balanced and suitable game. However, sometimes the algorithm faces some unexpected unfairness, and it ultimately leads an average of MMR team players to play with an average MMR team to reach an equal amount of MMR in total.

The new Ranked season is here. The changes in this update will be rolled out gradually over the next two days as we iron out bugs. The calibration part of the new season will begin this Thursday. One big observation that we had since the previous update was that matches with misaligned roles had a meaningful impact on game quality. An example of this is when the mid player for one team has the highest rank on their team, and the mid player on the other team has the lowest rank.
Hi There!!Welcome to the best Dota 2 coaching gig on Fiverr!I’ve been playing A player can obtain his or her MMR by participating in ranked matchmaking.
Getting proper matchmaking implemented in games, particularly MOBAs, is very important and Valve have been working towards getting it right. The most recent patch to hit the game continued to make improvements to the system, but there’s still a lot of work to be done, as evidenced by the long queue times. Things have gotten so bad with the queues that Valve had to release a statement to let players know they are looking into it.
They explained they might roll back some of the quality settings for this weekend as they work to figure out what is causing the long wait times. It’s never good to see a team run into snags like this, especially when it comes to something as important as matchmaking, but the developers felt like having players get into games was more important in the meantime. We are aware of matchmaking queue times taking a very long time and are working on improving it.
We may need to slightly relax a few of the new quality settings for the weekend and then we’ll continue tightening things on Monday. Another big change was 5-person parties would only be matched against fellow stacks of five, which was supposed to help level the playing field.
Dota 2: Continuing Matchmaking Updates
After first 5 days of calibration, we realized that the medal cap is higher on new season of Dota 2 since they removed 0 star medal. After that, remaining 9 matches was all Legend. I ended up having a really good string of matches, ending with 8 wins 2 losses and gaining around mmr.
A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. There are two major aspects with this change: 1 the teamplay and social aspect and 2 the value and correctness of the MMR value.
For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends. The game currently overly emphasizes playing solo and establishes a strong social reward mechanism for this, which causes many players to prefer playing alone than with friends. We believe that bias has over time caused more negativity and unhappiness when playing Dota.
Furthermore, Dota is a very teamplay heavy game and we want to consider that aspect a bit more strongly in the hierarchy of matchmaking values. For the correctness of the MMR aspect: We recognize that there is a tradeoff here on the mmr data quality if the match has solo mmr numbers with party mmr numbers, however we feel that the impact of that data noise is much smaller than even we initially considered it to be early on and generally with how it is discussed online.

I have been asked numerous times about the current rank distribution in Dota 2. The following dataset has the purpose to create a plausible MMR distribution by collecting data from as many players as possible.
With over 3 million season 4 5 million season 3 , 6 million season 2 , and 5 million season 1 players analyzed, we can consider this distribution very realistic.

What that means is in any match that includes a player that has an MMR score of more than 7,, role selection will automatically be turned off. The point of this update is to improve the quality of high-rank matches by letting players who know the game and multiple positions freely pick heroes without worrying about being typecast into a specific role. Jeff Hill, a Valve employee, made sure to clarify what this change meant for the game when questions began popping up on the Dota 2 subreddit.
And, unlike the solo option, you do not need to turn on a setting to remove role select, it is done automatically when the game reaches the right benchmarks.

The update adds a new rule that any group with a player at Immortal rank or above will have every player treated as the same rank as the highest-ranked player. In light of the changes to party matchmaking mentioned above, Valve has reduced the acceptable MMR spread within a party from to to make it easier for groups with high MMR disparities to find compatible opponents. The reduction in acceptable MMR spread is only applicable to ranked matchmaking however, as Valve admits they are still tweaking the system.
Another big change coming with the update is a stricter ruleset for matchup combinations between parties and solo players. Five-stacks will now only be matched against other five-stacks, while solo players will only face off against either a full team of solo players or a party of two alongside three solo players. Ranked medals have also been changed, with the number of stars shown for each medal reverted to five from seven. With this change, the MMR range for each medal has been rebalanced.
Instead, medals will be adjusted should a player become more than one star away from their actual rank. Alongside these changes, this new matchmaking update also changes the core matchmaking code and makes players that have a behavior score below unable to use chat or voice until their score rises above the acceptable threshold. Dota 2 Gets Big Experimental Changes to Ranked Matchmaking
Since the very first tweak during TI9, Valve hit a roadblock as most of the high-ranked players are still noticing a considerable disruption in their matches. For that matter, Valve has recently pushed another update regarding matchmaking to try and achieve different results. This update is supposed to minimize the problems that experienced players are facing, especially at some of the most experienced players across the globe.
If a game has good matchmaking, players’ overall enjoyment would rise higher, as everyone would have their chances to win against enemies on.
This ostensibly makes it difficult for skilled players to “climb” up the matchmaking ranking and out of Elo hell , due to the difficulty of consistently winning games under these conditions. Its existence in various games has been debated, and some game developers have called it an illusion caused by cognitive bias. The term was coined based on the Elo rating system designed by Arpad Elo , which was initially used for chess games but began to be used in video games as well.
Elo rankings have also been “abused” by players who create parties of their friends in order to “escape” Elo hell. Elo hell has also been noted as existing outside of video games, such as in the matchmaking app Tinder , which also uses a variant of the Elo rating system. Supposing that one is in Elo hell has been known to cause frustration and video game rage.
Valve has released another matchmaking update after the one on September 17th, which started off the new ranked season. The company had mentioned that they would take in feedback and act on it, and that;s exactly what they have done. Taking in feedback from the community, more changes have been added to matchmaking to make it a better experience for everyone involved. The update involves a host of changes made to matchmaking!
Valve is reportedly slapping misbehaving DOTA 2 players with for the purposes of gaining a higher or lower matchmaking rank in DOTA 2.
Online gaming can either be extremely fun or incredibly aggravating depending on the circumstances. It’s fun to play against your friends or other people, but all it takes is one lag spike or griefer to ruin the online experience. Developers have done a lot to try and make their online experiences better for all players. This coincides with an update posted on the game’s official website , which stated that the company is making its “smurf detection system” more sensitive.
It’s when a player of high skill or ranking logs into a separate account of a lower ranking to play against others who are below their skill level. Smurfing has become controversial among the gaming community. While there is nothing inherently wrong with creating a brand new account to play on, infiltrating lower rankings for quick victories can ruin the experience for others, especially new players who are still learning to play.
It’s a problem with no obvious solutions, as certain players will always find ways to take advantage of the system, and implementing too stringent of regulations may harm more players than help them. At the very least, this move by Valve is a step in the right direction that shows the company will work to ensure that all players, regardless of skill level, will have a good experience with Dota 2.

Dotabuff can only get your match data if you have the “Expose Public Match Data” setting enabled in the Dota 2 game client. If this setting is currently disabled, or was disabled in the past, then it’s likely that we don’t have all of your match data. Let’s get started by signing in with Steam, then we’ll provide a link to update your match history. Sometimes it can take up to an hour for your missing matches to appear. Please be patient and check back shortly.
Some matches in my Dotabuff have these 2 ‘skill levels’ written by them while a ranked match Dotabuff display “Very high skill”, while normal matchmaking.
This update also includes several changes intended to remove undesirable behavior from the matchmaking pool. First, being marked for low-priority matches now results in a duration-based ban from the Ranked queue, in addition to the current game-count-based low priority requirement. The ban will start at a low threshold of a few hours, and increase up to four days for players who are very frequently in low priority.
Next, it should go without saying that while the wide variety of playstyles that Dota players bring to a given match will always be welcome, intentionally ruining games for other players is never condoned. This should help resolve several areas in which these bot accounts have a negative effect on the experience of the Dota community. We will update these servers as the unranked populations in these regions grow to the critical mass needed to be able to support splitting the user base into Ranked and Unranked queues.
While there are some players that used these servers for Ranked, the low populations made them prime targets for various Ranked Matchmaking abuses. For the time being, players in these regions will need to join Ranked Matchmaking queues in one of the other nearby supported servers. True Sight — The International Jan.
